THE BENEFITS OF A WARDROBE STYLIST

While lighting is key in composing a great image, there are so many factors to having a successful shoot! Our friend and wardrobe stylist, Emily Goodin, shares her 3 benefits to hiring a wardrobe stylist.

Emily Goodin is a Nashville, TN based wardrobe stylist.

Goodin got her start styling after opening a bridal and formal wear boutique in 2006. “That was my first, real experience in the fashion industry,” states Goodin. “I jumped right into buying, styling photo shoots for my ads, coordinating runway shows, and styling my clients for the ‘most important days of their lives’ – weddings, proms, and red carpet special events! After running the store for 9 years, I decided it was time to go full-time with styling outside of the boutique. I moved to Nashville in 2015 and have been styling individual clients ever since!”

THREE – WHY SHOULD YOU HIRE A STYLIST?
Wardrobe can either make or break an entire shoot! What looks great in person doesn’t always translate on camera. I encourage all of my clients, especially those seeking branding and lifestyle images or portraits, to consider hiring a wardrobe stylist.

“Until I worked with a stylist, I didn’t have a clue how much they can assist in creating the perfect image of my client,” states photographer Tausha Dickinson. “But, once I worked with Emily Goodin, Wardrobe Stylist with Effortless Style, I knew that I wanted her on every shoot! Her eye for ‘what works and what doesn’t’ on a person’s body on camera is second to none.”

TWO – WHAT SHOULD A PHOTOGRAPHER LOOK FOR WHEN HIRING A STYLIST?
On-set experience, a broad portfolio of different styles, and experience working with males and females.

ONE – WHAT ELEMENTS, OTHER THAN STYLING, CAN A STYLIST BRING TO A SHOOT?
A professional stylist with on-set experience will see any garment (or items) that are out of place in the shot. While you’re busy setting up the shot, you may not notice a hair out of place or a gaping blouse. This can cause some major headaches in editing…and could even ruin the shot! Have you ever had that EPIC shot and then realized there’s something out of place that causes you not to be able to use the image? A stylist can act as your right hand when it comes to making sure the shot is perfect for you and your client. It also makes things less awkward with adjustments to garments. Stylists are specifically there to make sure everything is where it’s supposed to be! A seasoned stylist can also provide a unique, creative perspective on shot angles and the best placement for making sure the client looks their best.

**BONUS** – ADDING A STYLIST TO YOUR PROPOSAL
Photographers can quote styling in their proposals to clients who need them. “I provide general pricing so that photographers can make it easy for their clients when it comes to billing. The photographer can quote me as a line item on their proposal/invoice and then we can settle up payments when the shoot happens. If a photographer needs a custom quote for a specific client, I’m always happy to provide an estimate that more accurately fits their needs.”

“My passion is finding “the look” that makes my clients feel their best. And, perhaps the second most important job is making sure the wardrobe communicates the client’s message through the photo.”
